PINEY WOODS
911 DISTRICT

CHANGING THE WAY WE OPERATE TO ENHANCE 911 COMMUNICATIONS

Continuing its close collaboration with state and local authorities, ETCOG remains the primary planning and coordinating body for emergency 911 communications in 10 of the 14 East Texas counties. While our 911 program has thrived within the state’s existing framework, a major turning point came in 2017 when ETCOG began the process of creating its own Emergency Communications District.

To make this transition a reality for the East Texas region, we are methodically completing key steps, including securing resolutions of support from every jurisdiction we serve. At this time, only one resolution remains outstanding, excluding ETCOG and our designated “hold back” county. We are on track to finalize the formation of the Piney Woods 911 District by December 2027.

This new structure will empower local elected officials to set district policies, strengthening local control and decision-making. It will also ensure that landline and wireless fees generated in our service area stay in the region, increasing funding for critical initiatives.

Beyond funding, this transition will provide greater flexibility in how resources are used once the regional 911 system is governed locally. As we move forward, ETCOG is committed to keeping the community informed by sharing updates and milestones as we work toward completing this transformative project, which will enhance and strengthen the region’s 911 program.
